EssentialFlat water
Ollie Backside 180s
50 XP when a coach verifies it
What it is
The main skill we are going to learn here is how to land "blind". This means your body rotates 180º backside, but your front hand remains on the handle. If you can comfortably do this both regular and goofy your wakeboarding will progress much faster than if you can't. Take some time to learn these, we promise you won't regret it.
How to do it
- Have a gentle heelside edge
- Extend you arms as you stand tall for the ollie
- As you bend your knees for the pop, release your back hand and use it to swing for additional rotation in the ollie
- Turn your head and look for the water in front of your front foot (Don't look behind you!)
- Keep the arm with the handle close in to your back and keep your shoulder down and your core engaged to prevent getting unwrapped.
Common problems
- I am struggling to get the full 180 round. Make sure to turn your head all the way round to look over your front foot when you land. If you are looking behind you it makes it difficult finish the last 90º of the rotation.
- I keep getting unwrapped. Practice, practice & more practice! The ollie back 180 and blind landings are very difficult to master. Make sure to keep the handle in close to your back and your shoulder down to prevent unrwapping!
Tracking your progress on this skill arrives with goals (task 2.6).
